Colonial Psychology- Mad in America

Around the Web, from Psychology Today: “Psychological theory, research and practice have been increasingly criticized for their narrow perspective and biases, many of which are reflective of WEIRD culture (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic [sic]; Henrich et al., 2010). There are alternative approaches to psychology.

In his new book, A New Psychology Based on Community, Equality, and Care of the Earth, Arthur Blume (2020) provides both a critique and an alternative psychology, based on how psychology has been practiced for thousands of years by Indigenous/First Nation communities. Blume contrasts the premises of Indigenous psychology with what he calls colonial psychology.

Colonial Psychology

The field of psychology was founded by White males and continues to be dominated by people who are descendants of White Europeans. Only 0.1% of American Psychological Association membership is American Indian/Alaska Native. From the beginning the field tried to establish itself as a science, but not the kind of science Native Peoples practice.

Blume identifies several perspectives of the ‘colonial’ worldview he considers myths because they are contrary to the longstanding psychologies of Native Peoples.

Blume calls nature ‘creation,’ to ‘grant it the respect it deserves as the entity from which we derive our existences’ (pp. 4-5).

Here are key constructs within the field of ‘colonial’ psychology. Note that it can be difficult to recognize one’s own cultural assumptions unless one is immersed in a contrary culture. Again, these are contrary to Indigenous psychology.

— Creation must be improved.

— The individual self is central.

— Life is compartmentalized.

— Ownership is possible and desirable.

— Time is bounded.

— Existence is hierarchical.“

The Myth of Mental Illness

I have several of Dr ‘s books . He was alive when I started my waking and very honored in the movement against psychiatry as we now know it . It’s a very lucrative profession co joined with Big Pharma ( chemical companies) and very powerful ; deadly and the culprit for the erasure of families. Diagnosing behavior , no test and prescribing toxic medications which distort and often destroy the health and well being of a targeted individual as the list of drugs increases with ” side effects ” of said RX

The 80’s , ” The Society of Suicide” accepted the shadow side of psychiatry and this deception took root in our legal system which has only gotten much worse .

I highly recommend any of Dr S ‘s books and found this one is on Youtube and with a Christian take on the book but mostly correct in his summation .

Suicide

In this article it’s mentioned that lacking religion ( church is a place of fellowship ) is part of the reason for suicide; however the youth polled attribute their faith to spiritual.

Loneliness is another factor and indeed parents are taking their own lives in knowledge their children won’t care for them or have their best interest at heart should they become I’ll or terminal .

The harshness of the indoctrination and then the traumatic experiences for those in any branch of the services plus the large amount of vaccines given at once must be considered with regard to Army suicides

Add to that the profit of psychiatric drugs for Big Pharma and the distorted DSM and many suicides don’t get reported as autopsies are done without checking for drugs in most cases .

My ” suicide ” attempt was induced by Dr prescribed 3600 mg of gabapentin as it known to do especially in such high doses .
