Hormone D , and lowered suicide in study of 1.3 million Vets

Vitamin D Supplementation Associated with Lower Suicide Rates in Military Veterans

A study in conjunction with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) involving over 1.3 million veterans showed significant benefit from vitamin D regarding incidents of suicide attempts and intentional self-harm.

Supplementation with vitamin D2 or D3 was associated with 45% to 48% reduction in risk of suicide attempts and self-harm. Veterans with pre-study serum levels of vitamin D 25 (OH) D below 20 ng/ml had the most benefit from supplementation and those with measured levels of 40 ng/ml had lower incidence in general.

It should be noted that vitamin D3 supplementation more efficiently increases serum levels of 25(OH) D.

SB-331 – Judicial Education Curriculum

From SB-331: “SEC. 6. Section 3040.5 is added to the Family Code, to read: 3040.5. (a) A judge assigned to family law matters involving
child custody proceedings shall report to the Judicial Council the
number of hours in a program of continuing instruction in domestic
violence, including, but not limited to, coercive control and child
sexual abuse.”

The curriculum for judicial education is crucial. It must be balanced to the concerns of both parties. The following judicial curriculum is recommended:

  • Narcissistic, borderline, and dark personality pathology.
  • Family systems constructs.
  • Child abuse. The differential diagnosis of child abuse – identifying authentic child abuse versus false displays created by an allied pathological parent.
  • Intimate Partner Violence. The differential diagnosis of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) – identifying authentic IPV concerns surrounding the child versus false allegations made by a narcissistic-borderline-dark personality parent to manipulate the court’s decisions regarding child custody.

o Note research by Ok et al. (2021) regarding the manipulative “virtuous victim” presentation by the Dark Triad personality.

o Note research by Clemente et al. (2020) regarding the Dark Triad personality and judicial manipulation.

Mental Health Professionals Affected by personal experience in their council

A new study highlights how mental health professionals’ lived experiences influence their perspectives on mental health. The study, published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, investigates how clinicians’ first-person experiences of depression and their perceptions of their own susceptibility to mental health concerns affect their viewpoints on causes of depression, the connection between depression and burnout, and mental health issues in general.

Researchers found that previous experiences of depression and perceived vulnerability influenced whether clinicians viewed depression as caused by biological or social and psychological factors, as well as whether they viewed depression and burnout as connected or as separate concepts.

The inspiration for the current study was motivated by the significant number of clinicians who have lived experience of struggles with mental health. The researchers, led by Angel Ponew of the Medical University Brandenburg Theodor Fontane in Neuruppin, Germany, write:

“. . . a German study (EKB study) found that over 80% of a self-selected sample of mental health professionals stated to have experienced mental crisis including mental disorders.”
