Wisdom born of Pain

Sherrie Campbell PhD

It takes time for wisdom to develop because wisdom is almost always developed through pain. Empathetic people seem to learn the hard way because we are drawn to want to help others. It’s a beautiful thing to help and support other healthy people. However, the trap comes when we get stuck trying to help a toxic person.

Toxic people cannot be helped and not because they can’t be helped but because they do not want to be helped. It will not matter how reasonable your insights may be. They will not care. They have zero capacity for empathy. If someone has zero capacity for empathy, this also means they have zero capacity for insight.

Without insight there is no option for change. Toxic people like being how they are, or they would change. They get what they want, when they want it and they do not care about the collateral damage it causes to others or their relationships to get what they want. All people are replaceable to a toxic person. Hold the wisdom that you deserve far better than this.
