The Earth’s magnetic field is essential for life on our planet, because it protects it from cosmic rays and lethal radiation from the Sun, which would otherwise sterilize it. It is produced a few thousand kilometers beneath our feet by the movements that occur within the core.
In recent years, scientists have discovered that the Earth’s magnetic North Pole is moving rapidly toward Siberia, at a speed eight times faster than that of the magnetic South Pole. Unlike the geographic poles, which are fixed, the magnetic ones move and are not diametrically opposed. The magnetic South Pole is about 2,800 kilometers away from its geographic counterpart, while the North Pole is about 350 kilometers away.
The North Pole moves at a speed of about 37-72 kilometers per year, with a slight decrease in 2016, the speed of the South Pole is about 5-9 kilometers per year.
Analysis shows that the North Magnetic Pole has left the northern territories of Canada and is heading towards Siberia, while the South Magnetic Pole is moving more slowly towards the open ocean.
