Wolf Dancer This is the entire problem, Wolf! Neither you nor anyone else has ever heard of the antipsychiatry movement because the news media steadfastly refuses to publicize it. Antipsychiatry has been around since the 1960’s. Another confounding factor is that, decades ago, the drug companies successfully cultivated the mental health advocacy groups and convinced them of their products’ supposed superiority. The drug companies also wooed mental health professionals. These constituencies swallowed the drug companies’ propaganda hook, line, and sinker. The result of that was that something known as the, “medical model,” of human behavior became tragically entrenched in the mental health system. The medical model doesn’t benefit anybody except the drug companies. It’s devastating to patients’ lives because of how underhanded the medical model’s implementation is.
And sometimes the pursuit of one priority will encroach on the toes of another. Physically restraining someone for any reason at all is still traumatic to the person being restrained and, therefore, defeats the purpose of intervention. When intervening, it is obligatory to do no further harm and here lies the paradox of forced treatment and its state-sanctioned enforcement. Can you imagine how depressing it is for a patient to be intrinsically aware of a potential threat to them which can strike at any moment’s notice? How heavy a burden is this to bear? The suicide rate amongst mental patients continues to go further and further into oblivion, and this should come as no surprise.
