Why the DSM Is Mostly False | Nassir Ghaemi, MD – Mad In America

There is little science in these DSM diagnosis , as interviews testify, from psychiatric community . If a code or diagnosis is in the DSM it is billable , thus insurance pays .

Every human emotion, life experience, and health issue is covered as well as the non scientific codes for behavior ..

The DSM is a social construction, based on “pragmatism” much more so than science, and as such should only be used administratively at present.

Letting Go of Lithium – Mad In America

Lithium was the RX given me initially. It’s a metal, and I’m allergic

to metals. It’s harsh on the kidneys , so there were lots of blood works done .

Lithium destroyed my gut and I had diarrhea often and uncontrollable.

One of my Axis was Irritable Bowl Syndrome, ( labeled a metal disorder)

I sweat a lot, slept 14 hours and had lots of physical pain, all curtesy of Lithium.

I had dental abscess , and tooth loss , hair loss, acne , over and under sleep

not as present as I should have been ..

I don’t feel it should be prescribed , stabilizing mood at such a cost .

The healing journey is less about being free from medication and psychiatry and more about connecting with myself now. I am grateful for the freedom to feel. My world was shattered. The story I had believed about my experience, my diagnosis, and the medication were a lie.
