“It was lunar symbolism that enabled man to relate and connect such heterogeneous things as: birth, becoming, death, and ressurection; the waters, plants, woman, fecundity, and immortality; the cosmic darkness, prenatal existence, and life after death, followed by the rebirth of the lunar type (“light coming out of darkness”); weaving, the symbol of the “thread of life,” fate, temporality, and death; and yet others. In general most of the ideas of cycle, dualism, polarity, opposition, conflict, but also of reconciliation of contraries, of coincidentia oppositorum, were either discovered or clarified by virtue of lunar symbolism. We may even speak of a metaphysics of the moon, in the sense of a consistent system of “truths” relating to the mode of being peculiar to living creatures, to everything in the cosmos that shares in life, that is, in becoming, growth and waning, death and resurrection.”
― Mircea Eliade, The Sacred and the Profane: The Nature of Religion
Countless are her aspects, here are three: Selene, Luna, Hekate. All incorporate two distinct and specific attributes: Woman and Moon. Her monthly lunar cycle is implicitly linked to both a woman’s menstrual cycles and the three phases of womanhood: maiden, mother and crone. The most visible symbol of feminine energy in our cosmos, she represents water, emotions, oceans, mists .Represented here as Luna, She is inconceivable mystery, gentle but capable of commanding oceans and always faithful to her nature. She is the luminous numinous, and Her power is never diminished.
In Greek mythology, Selene was the Titan goddess of the moon, often depicted as a beautiful woman riding a silver chariot across the night sky. She wore a crescent moon crown and long robes.
Selene’s name means “moon” or “brightness”. She was sister to Helios, Titan of the sun, and Eos, the dawn. Selene fell in love with the mortal Endymion, casting him into eternal slumber so she could be with him forever.
Selene embodies the divine feminine qualities of intuition, cycles, magic, and visions. The moon’s phases reflect our inner landscapes – shadow and light held in balance. To alchemists, Selene represented the alchemical process and pursuit of the philosopher’s stone.
Selene invites you to embrace your hidden aspects and unconscious wisdom. Explore your dreams, creativity and emotions by her light. Selene signals it is time for spiritual nourishment through meditation, journaling, and nature communion.
