Invasive Plants to the Rescue! Some ‘invasives’ that can be helpful in these times.
Not medical advice; Compassionate Plant and People Advocates, we do NOT treat or diagnose.
Known as invasive plant medicine – instead of viewing certain plants as a ‘pain in the butt’ or ‘invasive’ we could re-frame the issue as benevolent, sentient beings offering themselves up freely en masse for our very inflamed and dis-ease ridden society.
Here is a short list of some powerful ‘invasive plants’ that are sure to exist near you (in this region), also included is the part of the plant used and how they may help with current situation:
Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) – root – antiviral for SARS group viruses, highly protective of lymphatic endothelial integrity, interferes with cellular invasion of pathogens, and damaging impacts of cytokines, inflammatory damage/stopping clotting, inhibits JNK, helps quiet STING-initiated, overactive IFN activity, reducing overall systemic inflammation, useful for treating pulmonary problems associated with covid, downregulates MMP-9/inflammation pathways, blocks viral attachment to ACE2, can be helpful with shortness of breath, fibrosis (scarring), numbness, carpal tunnel, angina, palpitations, immune, Lyme
Elder – (Sambucus spp.) – flowers, berries, leaf, stems, twigs, bark, root – Elderberry is an effective anti-viral and immune booster with widespread popularity. The berries are the part most widely known and used, though the least anti-viral. The leaves, stems, bark, and root have all been used medicinally and Stephen Buhner believes they are all more potently anti-viral than the berries and flowers. Many people, with great success, have relied heavily on Elderberry syrup alone as an immune booster over the years. Elder helps block ACE2 viral attachment, helps inhibit TNF-a, keeps organ functioning healthy, helps increase T Cell counts. Helpful with fever, flu, cough. Oil extract of leaves good for traumatic injures/sports injuries/wounds/burns.
“The leaves and bark are far more potent anti-virals than the berries or flowers. I would not suggest the berries for use in treating this pathogen; they are not, in my opinion, strong enough. To make a decocted elder leaf tincture: Boil four ounces of dried elder leaf (two ounces if fresh) in two quarts water until it is reduced by half. Cool, strain, then measure the amount of liquid left. To this add 25% pure grain alcohol. If your state will not allow you to buy pure grain alcohol (which is 95% alcohol) then after you cool and strain the liquid, put it in the pot again and reduce it once more by half. Let it cool again and then measure and add to it the same amount of 40% to 50% vodka. Hopefully, someone will begin making this commercially soon.” Stephen H. Buhner (Since February of this year, our Elder tinctures are made this way, and we add berry and flower tincture to it for potent whole plant tincture.)
Kudzu (Puearia lobata) – root – upregulates ACE2, increase ACE2 presence, protect lungs from injury, downregulates overactive cytokines, stimulates DC maturation for generation of active T Cells, antiviral for SARS viruses. A very important, multi-dimensional herb for covid infections.
Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) – inhibits JNK, helps quiet STING-initiated, overactive IFN activity, reducing overall systemic inflammation, useful for treating pulmonary problems associated with covid, effective antiviral for SARS group viruses, can help inhibit/reduce/repair fibrosis (scarring), also for colds, fever, flu, dysentery, TB, bronchitis
Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) – inner bark (peels off easily under thin outer bark) – inhibits JNK, helps quiet STING-initiated, overactive IFN activity, reducing overall systemic inflammation, helps with diarrhea, bronchial dilator, anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic (esp in lungs), anti-asthmatic, antiviral, antioxidant, anti-malarial, anti-microbial, antimycotic (anti-fungal); helps with shortness of breath
Blackberry Root – Diarrhea, Strong decoction: put one to two
ounces of the root in two quarts of water. Bring to boil, simmer until liquid is reduced to half.
Cool and then consume during the day. Repeat every day until diarrhea is under control. Note:
This should also help control any bleeding that is occurring.
Autumn Olive – Berries – maybe not specific to corona, but these abundantly free ‘nuisance’ berries are high in Vitamin C, shown to be helpful in disease preventing and treating covid patients, and become available for harvest just before onset of flu season.
A few other plants that can be found in the wild that can be useful in these times:
Angelica, Mullein, Horsetail, Holly, Gravel Root, Dandelion, Agrimony/Cinquefoil, Boneset, Nettle, Cleavers, Hawthorn, Lobelia, Red Clover, Melilot

Not medical advice. We do not treat or diagnose. “Sadly, despite a senior white house official touting unproven remedies (injecting or drinking bleach?) that are seriously dangerous, the government has made looking at herbal companies who make COVID products a priority. Thus, companies who are making up these blends have become, let us say, shy.” Buhner
